Cyprus has the lowest suicide rate in the EU

Cyprus had the lowest suicide mortality rate in the European Union: 2.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This is according to data published by Eurostat on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10. Statistics refer to 2021.

During this period, 47,346 deaths due to suicide were recorded in the European Union. This corresponds to 0.9% of all deaths for the year or an average of 10.2 suicides per 100,000 people.

Compared to 2011, the first year for which data is available, deaths by suicide fell by 13.3%, or 7,277. In 2011, the standardized suicide death rate in the EU was 12.4 per 100,000 people.

People most often take their own lives in Slovenia, which has the highest suicide rate relative to population: 19.8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. It is followed by Lithuania (19.5) and Hungary (15.7).

At the opposite end of the scale is Cyprus, which has the lowest suicide mortality rate (2.7 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants). Suicide rates are also low in Greece (4.2) and Italy (5.9).

As in previous years, the suicide rate among men was significantly higher than among women. Men accounted for 76.7% of all deaths due to suicide.

Most often, people aged 45-64 years resort to suicide. Deaths from suicide among people of this age account for 17,441 cases or 37% of the total. In second place are residents over 65 years of age (15,998 deaths or 34%).
