Cyprus could join Schengen as early as 2025

On October 10 and 11, a meeting of the Council of Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs of the EU countries was held in Luxembourg, which was attended by the Minister of Justice and Public Order of Cyprus, Marios Hartsiotis. At the meeting, Hartsiotis presented Nicosia’s position regarding Cyprus’ full membership in Schengen by 2025.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen previously gave guarantees to the President of Cyprus about the country’s support in this process. The key issue remains the Green Line, which is supposed to become the EU’s de facto external border, which complicates the process.

Cyprus’ accession to Schengen will provide enhanced border controls through the European border and coast guard service Frontex and enhanced capabilities to combat illegal immigration. Since July 2023, Cyprus is already part of the Schengen Information System (SIS), which strengthens security measures and contributes to the fight against crime and terrorism.
